Juneteenth

Today started in Rockingham County, then on to Forsyth, Surry, and finally Wake County to catch all the Juneteenth festivities.
The highlight of the day was at the former J.J. Jones High School in Mount Airy. What was once a segregated Black high school is now a community resource center where Black, White, and Latino residents have come together to create a space that builds community, invests in the future (they have a daycare!), and a museum that preserves Black history.
Im happy to report that a small piece of Dr King’s dream is alive and well in little ole Surry County. Who would have thought?
Thanks to Chair Adreann Bell for showing me around the campus.
